Week of August 12th

Week of August 12th

Math - We are working on learning how to count to 120 starting at any number. Students should be able to also write these numbers without any reversals. Please practice this - especially numbers about 100 as we are finding many students are unable to write these numbers at this time. We have begun to introduce our math tubs and students are working on mastering the ability to work independently and with partners to enhance their learning.

Writing - The genre for first quarter is personal narrative. This means we are writing true stories about ourselves, things we have done, and/or things that have happened to us. We will be working on this all quarter but by the end of the quarter, students should use an opening/topic sentence, transition/temporal words, and have a clear closing.

Phonics - Students are reviewing short vowel sounds and incorporating them into phonics games and activities. At this point, students should be able to read and spell simple CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words with the correct vowels. We even used some alien talk this week - ask your student about it! If you are wanting to practice at home, have students write simple sentences and phrases with short vowel sounds. Remind them to tap about the words if they are unsure of the spelling.

ELA - This week, our focus is on the story elements (characters, setting, problem and solution). Once your student has mastered these (in story they read and are read to them), work on retelling stories using sequence of events.

Science - Students are learning about types of weather, seasons, and weather instruments. They are keeping a weather log and making predictions on what they think the next day's weather will be like. This week, we are starting to learn about different weather instruments. Students will learn what rain gauges, thermometers and weather vanes are. Students should also know the different types of precipitation.

Social Studies - Students will be learning about what it means to be part of a community and what it means to be a good citizen. We will also be learning about important American symbols and how they contribute to the "Story of America".
