Math: We are working on combinations to 10. Our new math strategy is make a 10. Students can show this using ten frames and counters as well as written number combinations.

Fluency is a key skill for developing number sense. Please practice number combinations up to 10 at home.

Writing: Students are still working on writing personal narratives. (This type of writing lasts all quarter). Students should have a beginning, 2 or more events using transition words and a closing to wrap up their story. We are trying to encourage students to add as many details to create a clear picture for their reader.

Phonics: Vowel focus for the week is the sound short u makes. We will continue using the pattern using CVC words. Red words (sight words) for the week are: what, put, does, under, until. These are the words students will need to memorize because they are sight words or follow a pattern/rule that has not been taught yet. Practice these using flashcards or any other way you can think of.

Reading: Students have been practicing retell using story elements, setting, characters, problem and solution. This week we will add the 5 finger retell which will also focus on the beginning, middle, and end parts of a story. Use this strategy in your nightly reading.

Science: Seasons and types of precipitation

Social Studies: We will be discussing what a patriot is , map skills, and sympbols that are significant to America. Please practice with your child understnading the difference between their country and state and be able to locate them on a map.
