Week of 9-16 thru 9-20

This week's learning:

Math- How can I use place value? What are the place value seats? How can I compose and decompose numbers 11-19? How do the two digits represent tens and ones? How can I represent and solve word problems within 10?

Students need to understand the place value seats. Make sure they understand how to count by 10's as well. Here is an anchor to show the number 14 in different ways. Make sure your student is practicing how to write the number in tens frams (How many groups of 10 did it take to make that number and how many tiny ones helped make that number? How do you know?) What is the value of each digit in the place value seat?

Check out this video! This is a catchy way to remember how many tens and ones make up the teen numbers!

Writing: Students are still working on Narratives this 9 weeks. There checklist for their writing consists of:

-An opening or hook

-Recounting atleast 2 or more sequenced events with transition words

-A closing to wrap up their writing (NOT "THE END")

-Legibly prints upper and lowercase letters

-Prints with appropriate spacing

-Uses punctuation

-Spells untaught words phonetically

Reading- Show students cover art work from a picture book. Have them brainstorm questions they would like answered from the story. Good readers ask questions before they read and as they read to help monitor their understanding and comprehension. Students must be able to retell events of story using transition words.

Phonics- This week we are working on glued sounds! (-am, -an, -all). These you cannot tap out. They are glued together and say their special team sound. As we take dictation tests and practice dictation for the week, we are looking for students to apply the rules or patterns that we are teaching them. Last wee we were working on open vs. closed syllables. Make sure you are still practice those as well. Not just how to spell open and closed but also....Can you read them?

Ex. mo yo te pi stu pu/ seg tiz bog tog

We do real words and nonsense words to practice patterns and rules.

Your red words this week: other brother mother friend knew

Drill these words daily. They should be able to read them and spell them.

Social Studies: Students should be able to identify and state where they live on a map of the world. (continent, country, state, city, and county) Make sure you are practicing this at home. Also, please be practicing your specific address at home with your student.

The c's seem to be challenging. Use the terminology at home. Also, if you are going out of town next week, show a map of the US and find where you are on a map. Have students practice using the compass rose to identify what direction you all will be traveling in and what way you will be returing home.

Science- WHat is a magnet? What does repel mean? What does attract mean? What is a north and south pole? Why are these important to magnets?
