Math: This week we are returning to math strategies. First grade math strategies are used to help with problem solving and fact fluency. This week will focus on doubles, doubles +1, and make a 10. Make a 10 is a strategy that is difficult to understand for some. Please use the attached video to help guide you at home with practice as needed.

Writing: Students will continue to practice their informational writing skills to show they are experts in certain topics. We will write a How To Build a Scarecrow and focus on adding other non-fiction features to our stories. Examples are diagrams, captions, labels to pictures and bold print words to show importance.

Phonics: We will continue to practice blends, and digraphs. The tr and dr beginning blends are a tricky one to hear so these words can be great additional practice at home. We will also be practice when to use c vs. k when we hear the sound in a word. Curvy c goes with curvy a, o and u....straight k goes with straight i, e and y. Red words: came, ask, last, from, take

Reading: We will be using informational texts to determine the main idea the author is trying to teach. Once we have identified the main idea, we will work on identifying the supporting details that go with that main idea. We will also continue to identify the different non-fiction text features the author uses to provide information about the topic as well.

Science: We will continue our study on light. New vocab for the week includes reflect, refract and absorb. Through our field trip to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens on Wednesday we will begin to get the background knowledge we need to continue on with our 1st grade garden STEM project. If you have time, you should check out the awesome scarecrows the 1st graders created in the 2nd grade butterfly garden area! We can't wait to have our own garden area by the end of they year!

Social Studies: Thomas Jefferson: We will be continuing the learn about his importance to our country, how he improved the lives of others and compare/contrast life back then and now.
