Math - We continue to work on using multiple strategies to solve equations. This week, our focus will be on subtraction. Students will learn how to use a number line to subtract, using doubles and related facts, and making a ten to subtract. If your student has mastered making a ten in addition, try subtraction. It can be a challenge but extra practice is important.

Writing - This 9 weeks, the focus is informational. Students have been working on writing things they know a lot about. We are going to switch gears a little bit and work on how-to writing this week. It is amazing to see all the things kids know how to do and want to teach others.

Phonics - We will continue practicing when to use c vs. k when we hear the sound in a word. Curvy c goes with curvy a, o and u....straight k goes with straight i, e and y. We will also be working on adding suffix s and es to our words. Red words: many, each, been, does

Reading - We are continuing to use informational texts to determine the main idea the author is trying to teach. Once we have identified the main idea, we will work on identifying the supporting details that go with that main idea. We will also continue to identify the different non-fiction text features the author uses to provide information about the topic as well.

Science - This week's focus is on light sources and natural vs man made sources of light. Students will investigate shadows and how the location of the light source affects the shadow.

Social Studies - This week, we are concluding out study on Thomas Jefferson. Students should know how our world today was influenced by him and compare and contract our life and his. They should also be aware of his character traits like perseverance and determination.
